As an 18-year-old amateur in 1977, John McEnroe won the mixed doubles and junior singles titles at Roland Garros while partnering with Mary Carillo previously. John McEnroe then advanced to singles qualifying at Wimbledon and entered the main draw, where he lost to Jimmy Connors in the semifinals in four sets. It was the best record for a male tennis player in qualifying in any major tournament and the record for an amateur player in the Open Era.
