Before today, I never even knew what my life was missing: AUBURN SIDEBURNS. Here are photos of Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter at the BFI London Film Festival premiere (and de facto London premiere) of Black Mass. Benedict is wrapping up his time on the London stage in Hamlet (he’s done at the end of the month) and Sophie is…? I don’t know. Something something opera director. But they had a night off and so the premiere became a date night.

I have to say, I kind of think Sophie looks great here. Right? Her weird dress with a metal cage is by Dior. And of course it had pockets, because chica loves pockets. She will not bother with a dress unless it has pockets. Even though the Dior sort of makes it seem like we’re about to get Cumberbaby Part Deux, I think this is just a tent dress for the hell of it. There were SO MANY tent dresses on so many runways this year.

As for Bendy in this film, The Telegraph did a funny rundown of tweets about Benedict’s terrible attempt at an authentic Boston accent. Cumberbatch plays Billy Bulger (a famous Massachusetts politician and Whitey Bulger’s brother) and the accent work was no bueno. You can read the Telegraph piece here. The Boston accent is rather famously difficult for non-Bostonians to attempt, so don’t slam him too hard!

Last thing: Benedict said words about fatherhood and baby Christopher Carlton Cumberbatch. He told The South Bank Show that he “used to think you had to be childless to be a Hamlet” but he thinks fatherhood made him a better Hamlet: “I thought that it may be a difficult ingredient to play with but it’s miraculous – as I’m sure you know being a dad – that your thinking about how you were parented shoots up as well.” He also said that he’s able to drop the character quickly: “I drop it all very, very quickly because I have to eat and sleep. That’s honestly the truth. And get home, to a newborn.” So… not really words about fatherhood as much as how the baby affects his work. Sure.
